5 Things You NEED To Buy For Your New Home

5 Things You NEED To Buy For Your New Home

Did you just buy a new home? Congratulations!

Most of the hard work is done and now your brain is mush. So what do you need to buy beyond the fun things?

I’m here to give you 5 Things You NEED To Buy For Your New Home to keep you safe and save you a trip to the hardware store down the line.

Purchase 1 - Re-Key

Your first step when getting ownership of your new house is to Re-Key.

The house and keys are new to you but we can’t guarantee who has copies laying around for your doors.  For safety sake and your own piece of mind, start your new home ownership journey by purchasing a new lock.

Also remember to change any door or garage codes.

Purchase 2 - Emergency Kit

Number two on your purchase list should be an emergency supply kit.  It won’t be the most glamorous thing to buy but every house needs one.

Here is a list of things you should include:

  • flashlights
  • batteries
  • candles
  • a first-aid kit
  • can openers
  • blankets
  • toiletries
  • fire extinguisher
  • cash
  • any important documents
  • non-perishable food and water for 72 hours
  • Pet food and water

Pack these in a tote and label the box and update anything expired over time. If you live in a two story home, explore fire escape tools for second story exit options for emergencies.

Purchase 3 - Cleaning Supplies

Yes, I know my list keeps getting more and more exciting doesn’t it!  Like it or not, basic cleaning supplies are necessary to keep your home safe and maintained.  Electronics, appliances and your home overall will last longer if you keep things dusted and unclogged.

Don’t feel the need to go and buy every cleaning product on the market.  That can get very expensive.  Invest in some good quality products that can be diluted or even the good old white vinegar and baking soda comes in handy for most cleaning needs.

Here is a list of things you should include:

  • broom or vacuum
  • kitchen clothes
  • bucket
  • tea towels
  • dusting mitt
  • mop system
  • vinegar
  • baking soda
  • soap

Purchase 4 - Tool Kit

Number four on your purchase list should be a basic tool kit.

You will either have to take care of repairs and replacements by yourself or by calling a professional. If you have warranties in place when your home’s systems and appliances fail, you can have them repaired or replaced by calling for a service request. If not, many small home repairs or maintenance can be done by your own research and a few basic tools.  You may even need these to build new furniture when you move in.

Here is a list of things you should include:

  • pliers
  • tape measure
  • screw drivers (flat & Phillips)
  • utility knife
  • adjustable wrench
  • wrench set
  • claw hammer
  • scissors
  • allen keys

Purchase 5 - Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The most important safety investment you can make for your home is smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This is a non-negotiable.

The average battery-powered smoke alarm has a lifespan of 10 years. Many homes are now hardwired in but it’s still important to verify they are functioning properly.

Some basic guidelines if you need to know where to install them and how many. Ideally install them on the ceiling or wall that is not near a fan and one in each bedroom, kitchen, and floor minimum.

There are many in depth blogs, websites and local fire community experts you can reach out to on this topic. So you have no excuses.

Keep your new investment safe and most importantly your family.
